Iphone image workflow and evolution.

Hi, Thought I’d post another manipulated image today, with an explanation as to how I achieved it and what apps I used. Also the different ideas and how the image evolves. Here’s the final image which I titled Recollections. I wanted a slightly unnerving appeal with the main character in a hospital gown visualising events from his past. All the images were taken using the Hipstamatic app.

IMG_3382 There’s him the younger man to his right shouting in the street, His parents walking away from him fading into the distance, and the additional older character leaving the scene. There’s four images all merged together in superimpose which is a fantastic app for this kind of workflow. I started with just a background..

7818684424_051fcfd48b_b This I cropped square and got rid of the birds on the left. I then imported my first image, the man in the hospital gown..

IMG_3369 IMG_3370 IMG_3371 You can use the transform tool to resize the image and place it anywhere on the background. There are also blending modes with which you can adjust the opacity or overlay the image. I then brought in the other images into superimpose. There’s a masking tool where you can erase and paint onto any part of the image. Here I used saved images from previous works that are kept in the library, another great feature..

IMG_3372 IMG_3373 IMG_3374 IMG_3375

As you can see I’ve positioned each layer where I wanted, resized and blended into the main image. I then saved the image to my camera roll and opened it up in scratchcam. This is another great app that has loads of different textures and scratches built in. You can also dial down the effect to get the desired result.

IMG_3376 IMG_3377 I also use distressedfx and mextures a lot, two fantastic texture apps as well. I then saved to my camera roll and opened up the image in my number one app snapseed. This is a great editing app that has loads of different effects built in as well as some useful textures like vintage and grunge..

IMG_3379 IMG_3380 IMG_3381 The first image is with a grunge effect added, the second with a vintage effect which I settled for. I also added a border and finally saved to my camera roll..

IMG_3382 I always put the image through various programs to see how it may improve and sometimes come back to an image after a period of time and change it around then for a fresh perspective. This is all part of the evolution of an image and is why I never truly consider them complete!

Four different interpretations of the same image. Thanks for looking and please post any comments below….

Iphone hipstamatic edited images.

Hi, Thought I’d share another image from my Echoes series. This is basically three iphone5 images that were brought into superimpose and a single image was created from them. I then did some basic editing in snapseed and took the image through scratchcam to give it a grungy just found in the street feel.

IMG_3157 IMG_3255 IMG_3263

All the original images were taken on my iphone using the hipstamatic app which is my most used camera replacement app and has some great lens/film combos. The first image was taken with the sergio + maximus LXIX combo and the next two with the Yoona + blanko BL4 combo. Heres the final image after my editing was completed…

Thanks for Looking and please leave any feedback you may have….

Iphone Projects and creative workflows

Hi, I thought I’d show you some more images that I’ve created using my Iphone5 and two or three different apps. I’m currently working on a theme called Echoes in which I imagine what certain places or buildings would show us if they had memories. I love history especially that of Cities and how they have evolved over the centuries and all the millions of lives that have passed through them and are buried beneath the surface so I decided to create some images of things or events that these places have witnessed. Having some kind of project is a great way of keeping your photography interesting and focussed whether it be a daily photo challenge or a local history project of your local area, I find it’s a great way of  peaking my interest in photography. Up until a year ago I used primarily a Nikon D90 and a Panasonic GF2 compact camera with about six lenses between them and I was getting bored! So I decided to sell both cameras and all my lenses and use just an iphone5 to see if I could spark my enthusiasm again. I might add that I’ve been taking images for about 30 years and the last 6 years as a member of a local photographic society so it wasn’t a spur of the moment decision or an ill informed one. I generally like taking street images and some architecture and also messing around with different editing systems so it wasn’t a massive move for me as it would have been if my interest lay in wildlife photography or sports! Even so it was a challenging leap but most importantly great fun. I’ve discovered a thriving and extremely friendly  Iphone photography movement online with some truly stunning artists out there who consistently produce images that I could only wish to emulate. I leant to zoom with my feet and do some thinking before I started shooting, but mainly I’ve discovered the joy of making images again and the ability not to take myself too seriously and most importantly to take pictures for me first and foremost and if others like them, then, that was great too… so here’s some images from my Echoes series, let me know what you think, and thanks as always for looking.

Editing and Blending techniques on the Iphone5.

I thought I’d share with you today my work through for an image that was kindly featured in Theappwhisperer’s website on their flickr showcase last week. Thanks Joanne for the inclusion alongside some really stunning work by some very talented people, here’s a link if anyone is interested. http://theappwhisperer.com/2014/04/27/flickr-group-showcase-%E2%80%93-theappwhisperer-taw-%E2%80%93-april-27-2014/.

The image is titled Echoes and is part of a series I’m attempting to work on based on an idea of  walls and buildings having memories and what they would see. Here’s the final image.

IMG_2728 There’s basically six images blended together here. I only used three apps to edit these images together. Snapseed, Scratchcam and Superimpose. I started off with the background, an empty shopping unit with the picture taken through the window..

IMG_2668 I edited this in Snapseed to adjust the contrast brightness and cropping, I also used the vintage section to add a green colour tint and some scratches. Then I saved to my camera roll and reopened as the background image in Superimpose.

IMG_2921 I then import the other images as foreground images onto the superimpose screen one at a time as you can only blend individually…

IMG_2922 IMG_2923 There’s a transform tool to Position the top image and you can invert or turn the image as well. I then enter the mask mode where you can choose a brush and start to erase parts of the image as you require. There’s also an erase tool and a magic wand as well as a couple of other editing tools so editing can be very precise. The best part for me is you can expand or zoom in on an image for precise fine tuning….

IMG_2924 When you have finished with each image you can position them onto the background and blend them through a number of blending modes. I chose normal blending to make the images a slightly see through ghostly look. You can also save each edited mask into a library which is great if you need to use them again.. Here’s the other images I used in the final image..

IMG_2640 IMG_5076  IMG_1593IMG_2719 The last image is actually a painting by my wife which I resized to look like a Picture on the wall!!

After blending all the images onto the background I saved the image to my camera roll and opened the image in Scratchcam which is a brilliant app for added Textures, grunge and scratches. There I played around for a bit before settling on the final look before saving to the camera roll..

IMG_2723 Finally I opened the image in Snapseed to tune slightly before adding a slight blur around the edges and a border to get the finished result….Echoes

IMG_2728 I hope this has helped anyone interested in this kind of Iphone editing and maybe it has even inspired you to have a go which would be great..Thanks for looking..
