Photographic Musings on the technological

I’ve been thinking recently about the journey photography and we as photographers have taken especially in the last 10 years or so with the advances in technology and the ease of which we can communicate our visions or ideals now. I have been wondering if this is a good thing or not? We are and always have been a visual society and in some respects photography has come full circle. during the 1930’s through to the late 1950’s we had magazines like Picture Post and Illustrated, and in the 60’s and 70’s great supplement magazines from the Observer and Sunday Times where there was a strong emphasize on photojournalism. Television became dominant then and photojournalism went into decline and even more so when the internet hit. But here’s the strange thing, photography has become dominant again, there are thousands of blogs and posts from professional and amateur photographers and websites like Instagram and facebook have literally billions of photos on them. Cameras are now so sophisticated that they came cope with almost any situation especially with the sensitivity of their sensors and “brain power” of their chips. The trouble i have now is keeping up! and I know it’s probably an age thing. I can almost tell anytime now when somebody has stopped their own technical journey and have decided no more! Usually their operating system is two or three versions old, they are using CS4 or earlier and their camera is an older model. And thats fine, I love technology I love the way it has liberated millions of people who never would of dreamed of taking up photography as a hobby or career. I disagree with those who say that we are losing something in translation that photography was better, more real when we had film and the mystical dark arts of the darkroom. I hated the darkroom and so did many others, I didn’t enjoy waiting for my 36 exposures to come back to me only to find the images were rubbish or technically weak. It didn’t make me a better photographer! I look now and see some truly amazing artists out there who wouldn’t be known or their work wouldn’t be seen if not for the digitalisation of photography. There work is inspiring and just as valid as any of the photographers who came before, it’s just more difficult to sort through all the stuff thats out there! But if you persevere you can find them. My greatest photographic love at the moment is the iphone and all the amazing apps out there. I still can’t believe what can be achieved with this relatively small and simple camera attached to your phone! Some of the images out there are mindblowing and the work that goes into them inspiring. So I think the futures bright and the advances made and being made will only help us, it’s natural to be secure in the present and to not want to learn new things and it’s easy to say “it was so much better in my day” or “all this technology makes it easier to cheat” and so on and so forth. Truth is we are all on the same playing field essentially and are all capable of making the same decisions and mistakes as each other. The cream will always rise to the top and the greats will always emerge from us lesser mortals. So enjoy and take pleasure in our hobby and essentially if you like what you do then thats all that matters, it’s a nice bonus if others like it too!

Here’s Two recently Manipulated iphone images. Edited in superimpose, scratchcam and snapseed. Thanks for reading and as always look forward to any comments.

Iphone editing on fuji x20 images.

Hi, just got back from a week in Wales which was great and it only rained once! Took my iphone5 and my fuji x20 and got some great shots. Just beginning to get to grips with the fuji and I’m quite pleased with the results. I always used to shoot raw but I’m finding that the jpegs straight from the camera are great. I’m also editing all my images on the iphone and the results are good. These shots were taken in Brick lane London on the fuji and edited on my iphone5 when I got back.. IMG_4034 IMG_4044 IMG_4039 IMG_4038 I used some of my favorite apps to edit namely Snapseed, Scratchcam and Filmnoir. I used the HDR filter in snapseed to bring out some details and then dialed it down to about 25-30%. My next image is of my son Callum taken against bright sunlight in Wales. I used a black and white filter on the fuji and spot metered of his face. I then adjusted in Lightroom and copied into my iphone to play with some filters, I quite like the results.DSCF6309 DSCF6309-21 The first image is the original straight from the camera, the second is after it went through lightroom. The next image is post iphone editing using snapseed, filmnoir, icolorama and scratchcam. cal (2)

The next picture was taken at the same time, here’s the original..

DSCF6308 After some minor tweaks in Lightroom I imported to the iphone and edited in this order..snapseed, filmnoir , scratchcam and snapseed again..

IMG_4738 IMG_4739  IMG_4740 And here’s the final version.

IMG_4737 I prefer the first image but my wife likes this one best… All in all it took about 20-30 minutes per image so not bad or nearly as long as photoshop.

Thanks again for looking and please comment..

Street Photography and iphone editing

Hi, today I’m posting three images taken on a trip to London’s Brick Lane in the borough of Tower Hamlets. This is a great place for street photography as it’s so busy and colourful with some amazing characters. It’s also a great place for a curry!! All three images were taken on my new fuji x20 and then transferred to my iphone5 and edited in just three apps, Snapseed, scratchcam and Noir ( a great B&W textures app). Here’s the  first image…

IMG_3998 I cropped and did all the basic editing in snapseed then imported it into Noir and scratchcam to try different textures and effects…

IMG_4004 IMG_4003 IMG_4002

IMG_3999 IMG_4001 I quite like the gritty film look especially the scratches on the second image. Heres the next image..

IMG_4012 I love the look just as I pressed the shutter….Again I processed in snapseed and used a subtle Hdr filter there to bring out the details more. I then processed in Noir and scratchcam to add some grungy effects to the image..

IMG_4005 IMG_4006

IMG_4012 IMG_4013

Again I prefer the last image with it’s just found in the street effect!! The first two images were just developed in snapseed using the Hdr filter and the grunge filter..

Finally there’s this image..

IMG_4015 I once again used just the three apps to get some different results..

IMG_4016 IMG_4017

IMG_4018 IMG_4020 My favourites are 2 & 3.

I was quite impressed with the fuji x20. It only has a small sensor but coped remarkably well. It’s ideal for street photography as it’s retro, small and silent! It’s fantastic with B&W images and even the low light shots look grainy as opposed to noisy. It’s an ideal second camera.. Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment.

Speaker’s corner, Hyde Park, London.

IMG_2118 smll sze Today I’m posting some portraits from a recent shoot in Hyde Park, London, at Speaker’s corner. This is a meeting place where anyone who wishes can stand on a soap box and talk about, argue, debate, incite just about anything they wish to. As you can imagine it can get quite heated with various religious/political viewpoints being extolled/trashed depending on your standpoint. But it makes for some great photo opportunities and I’m never disappointed when I go there. I normally take my panasonic GF2 with a 14mm pancake and a 45-175mm zoom lens. I also always take my iphone5 for plenty of candid/street shots. Here’s some of my images from there.

IMG_2078 P1040270 P1040402-white P1040245sml

As you can see plenty of animated characters. There’s always an argument going on somewhere and plenty of crowd participation as well…

So if your ever in London on a Sunday you could do a lot worse than Speaker’s corner for some great and unique photo oppotunities..Thanks for looking..

Cat in red coat, iphone edit using snapseed, superimpose and disressed fx.

IMG_1323 Hi, I wanted to share one of my workflow edits on this site. I called this Cat in a red coat and used five images all taken on my iphone5 and joined together to make this final image. First of all a background image….IMG_1191  This was of a garage door, I used aIMG_1343 Filter in distressed fx and adjusted there to get the blend I required. I then imported it to Superimpose as a background image. Then I imported my second image into superimpose which was for the red coat.

IMG_1186 Using a combination of the mask and Transform tools I deleted everything  but the red coat and handbag. I positioned this on the bottom left hand side and used the normal blending mode to attain the look/effect I wanted. I then saved and merged and bought in my third image as a foreground, the cat.

IMG_0684 I basically followed the same procedure as with the coat, using the mask and transform tool to erase and position as required. As I did with my forth image the clock!

IMG_1346 I used the overlay blending mask on this and rotated it upside down before positioning it in the top left hand corner.

IMG_1347 The tree was imported and blended into the bottom right hand side and the birds were used from a distressed fx texture. Finally I tweaked the whole image in snapseed and added a frame to complete the look, Cat in a red coat!

Hipstamatic capture and iphone editing.

] IMG_1012 IMG_1068 I’ve been out early this morning in my garden playing around with two apps. One is Hipstamatic, probably my favourite camera replacement app, just for it’s fun factor and it’s amazing analogue results. This image was taken using the Tinto1884 lens and D-type plate film. I love the effects this combo gives and it’s great for portraits as well! I edited in snapseed first of all, maionly using fine tune and detail presets. I then used distressed FX to apply the charm Texture which I adjusted to suit using the sliders there. Then over into Mextures to apply a grunge Texture again adjusted down slightly and finally into snapseed again to tweak and add a border. The next images were processed similarly.

IMG_1015 IMG_1062

IMG_0972 IMG_0976 This image was taken last winter on my Panasonic GF2. I transferred it over onto my iphone 5 and processed it there. Again I used Snapseed to initially tweak using fine tune, detail and the black and white presets, then transferred it over to Distressed FX and mextures to fine tune the Textures. I nearly always import back to Snapseed to do the final adjustments and add a border.

I’ve been trying to master the  Superimpose app recently with mixed results. This is a fantastic app that lets you add two images into it’s program and then merge them after working on each image, so it’s great for adding people to landscapes or a ship to a stormy sea or just making an image more pleasing/interesting! The next image shows a tree landscape with a spinning girl added to the right hand side, then converted to mono and tweaked in Snapseed. The original image was processed in Snapseed, distressed fx and mextures from an older overexposed winter shot!!

IMG_0456 IMG_0909

IMG_0935 IMG_0942 Finally a street scene taken on my iphone through the window of my van on a wet, foggy day. I processed in snapseed converting to mono and adjusting the contrast, then added a texture in distressed fx before finally adding the scratched and slightly damaged look in scratchcam, another great texture app which you can try for free before you buy!

Iphone editing using photo apps

IMG_0343IMG_0285 This shot was taken about 5 years ago on my then new Nikon D90. It was okay but the sky was bland and I didn’t look at again until recently and thought it might have potential as a processed iphone image! Basically edited in snapseed, distressed FX and Mextures I’m quite pleased with the overall effect and now am encouraged to maybe try some more old images and maybe unlock some hidden images.

IMG_0333IMG_0336

IMG_0347IMG_0350  These two shots were taken in 2011 in Aberdovey  a village on the north side of the estuary of the River Dyfi in Gwynedd, on the west coast of Wales.  . It has  really interesting seascapes and lots of small fishing boats for great photo opportunities. Taken on my Nikon D90 then processed on my iphone 5 using the usual suspects snapseed, Distressed FX and mextures, then back to snapseed for a nice frame. You can tune down each effect and play with contrast and saturation as well in Distressed FX, and each image took about 30-45 mins to create.

IMG_0253IMG_0256  Finally a carousel in Les biches France. I edited in photshop CS4 for a more Dramatic sky, then importrd to my iphone 5 to add a couple of textures and a nice Frame. Please tell me what you think and any other suggestions.

Speaker’s Corner 21/04/13

hyde park 2013 119 hyde park 2013 124 hyde park 2013 118 hyde park 2013 126 hyde park 2013 132

Another trip to Hyde park corner on Sunday. Very busy with glorious weather and the London Marathon being run. Just used my iphone which was really weird as I normally  go weighed downed with my Nikon DSLR and Panasonic compact and about 4 different lenses. It was quite a liberating experience but one which needs a lot of practice using all the different apps available and trying to get the effects I want. I also do a lot of post processing so this was a little strange just posting straight out of my phone!! I loved the way you could get in amongst the crowds and no one minded me taking pictures another weird development. I think I will stick with it for a bit as I’m getting quite disillusioned  with all the DSLR stuff! I want to get back to enjoying photography and taking pictures that I like…. I’ll keep you posted!!

Train Journey

Carriage tiphone4 015 iphone4 051 iphone4 055

Went up to Central London a few days ago and managed to get some shots on the train using my iphone and the hipstamatic app. Love this combo as you can get some great candid shots. Love the Lo-Fi images, I know “everybodies” doing it, but it does remind me of the old Eastern European film cameras of my youth with the wonderful light leaks and weird effects, besides i’m getting a bit bored with carting my Nikon and lenses with me and getting hostile vibes all the time.
