Street Photography using the iphone

Hi all, took a trip to London again yesterday for some street photography using just my iphone4 and iphone5. Had mixed results! I started off at the Barbican Centre on the overhead walkway and managed to get some atmospheric images using the hipstamatic app with the Lowy lens/Blackeys supergrain combo. I handheld all the shots and because it was quite dark there under cover some of the shots had blurring! I need to either rest the phone on a wall or other solid structure or make a conscious effort to keep my hands steady!! Anyway here are some of the better shots firstly from the barbican centre..

IMG_6543 IMG_6540

The first image is an overview of the Barbican centre, taken from one of the walkways. The second image is of one of the stairways leading down to a restaurant/leisure area.

IMG_6546 IMG_6542

These two images were taken on the walkways where it was quite dark. The day being overcast didn’t help either!

IMG_6544 IMG_6539

Two more “grab” shots from the walkways themselves.

From the Barbican I took a leisurely walk to Brick lane via Leadenhall and Aldgate. Stopped off at old Spitalfields market before heading home..

Two images from Brick Lane..

IMG_6549 IMG_6541

Finally the Underground back home. All these were Taken on the iphone which I would not have attempted 18 months ago, and although I had some blurring issues and exposure problems these can be overcome and with patience and practice the images will get better ( at least the quality, if not the content!!). So  take the plunge go somewhere with just your smartphone and see what can be achieved! thanks for reading and as usual please comment..Bye

Iphone editing on fuji x20 images.

Hi, just got back from a week in Wales which was great and it only rained once! Took my iphone5 and my fuji x20 and got some great shots. Just beginning to get to grips with the fuji and I’m quite pleased with the results. I always used to shoot raw but I’m finding that the jpegs straight from the camera are great. I’m also editing all my images on the iphone and the results are good. These shots were taken in Brick lane London on the fuji and edited on my iphone5 when I got back.. IMG_4034 IMG_4044 IMG_4039 IMG_4038 I used some of my favorite apps to edit namely Snapseed, Scratchcam and Filmnoir. I used the HDR filter in snapseed to bring out some details and then dialed it down to about 25-30%. My next image is of my son Callum taken against bright sunlight in Wales. I used a black and white filter on the fuji and spot metered of his face. I then adjusted in Lightroom and copied into my iphone to play with some filters, I quite like the results.DSCF6309 DSCF6309-21 The first image is the original straight from the camera, the second is after it went through lightroom. The next image is post iphone editing using snapseed, filmnoir, icolorama and scratchcam. cal (2)

The next picture was taken at the same time, here’s the original..

DSCF6308 After some minor tweaks in Lightroom I imported to the iphone and edited in this order..snapseed, filmnoir , scratchcam and snapseed again..

IMG_4738 IMG_4739  IMG_4740 And here’s the final version.

IMG_4737 I prefer the first image but my wife likes this one best… All in all it took about 20-30 minutes per image so not bad or nearly as long as photoshop.

Thanks again for looking and please comment..

Street Photography and iphone editing

Hi, today I’m posting three images taken on a trip to London’s Brick Lane in the borough of Tower Hamlets. This is a great place for street photography as it’s so busy and colourful with some amazing characters. It’s also a great place for a curry!! All three images were taken on my new fuji x20 and then transferred to my iphone5 and edited in just three apps, Snapseed, scratchcam and Noir ( a great B&W textures app). Here’s the  first image…

IMG_3998 I cropped and did all the basic editing in snapseed then imported it into Noir and scratchcam to try different textures and effects…

IMG_4004 IMG_4003 IMG_4002

IMG_3999 IMG_4001 I quite like the gritty film look especially the scratches on the second image. Heres the next image..

IMG_4012 I love the look just as I pressed the shutter….Again I processed in snapseed and used a subtle Hdr filter there to bring out the details more. I then processed in Noir and scratchcam to add some grungy effects to the image..

IMG_4005 IMG_4006

IMG_4012 IMG_4013

Again I prefer the last image with it’s just found in the street effect!! The first two images were just developed in snapseed using the Hdr filter and the grunge filter..

Finally there’s this image..

IMG_4015 I once again used just the three apps to get some different results..

IMG_4016 IMG_4017

IMG_4018 IMG_4020 My favourites are 2 & 3.

I was quite impressed with the fuji x20. It only has a small sensor but coped remarkably well. It’s ideal for street photography as it’s retro, small and silent! It’s fantastic with B&W images and even the low light shots look grainy as opposed to noisy. It’s an ideal second camera.. Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment.

Speaker’s corner, Hyde Park, London.

IMG_2118 smll sze Today I’m posting some portraits from a recent shoot in Hyde Park, London, at Speaker’s corner. This is a meeting place where anyone who wishes can stand on a soap box and talk about, argue, debate, incite just about anything they wish to. As you can imagine it can get quite heated with various religious/political viewpoints being extolled/trashed depending on your standpoint. But it makes for some great photo opportunities and I’m never disappointed when I go there. I normally take my panasonic GF2 with a 14mm pancake and a 45-175mm zoom lens. I also always take my iphone5 for plenty of candid/street shots. Here’s some of my images from there.

IMG_2078 P1040270 P1040402-white P1040245sml

As you can see plenty of animated characters. There’s always an argument going on somewhere and plenty of crowd participation as well…

So if your ever in London on a Sunday you could do a lot worse than Speaker’s corner for some great and unique photo oppotunities..Thanks for looking..

Hipstamatic Images and Iphone editing

IMG_5145 IMG_5146 IMG_2231 Went to the Victoria and Albert museum in London last week and decided to just use the hipstamatic app with the Yoona lens and blanko BL4 film for my images. This combo gives a great retro vintage look. It was quite dark in places but the images turned out ok, and only needed minimal editing. Main editing app used was Snapseed to adjust the brightness, contrast etc, add some blur to the edges and put a border around to finish off.

IMG_2128 IMG_2122 Here’s some more blended images that were made up of three other images and melded together in my favourite blending app, Superimpose. Here’s the three images that I used…

IMG_2069 IMG_2121 IMG_2108 The first blended image is actually made up of only the second two images, and processed in snapseed, superimpose, distressed fx and scratchcam. The second image is made up of all three images and processed in the same applications as the previous image.

IMG_1961 IMG_1974 IMG_1903 IMG_1918 I frequently use the same images for different composite creations as you can see in the next three images…

IMG_2028 IMG_2034 IMG_1989 It never ceases to amaze me the number of different effects and textures you can achieve on the iphone using just a few different apps. All my images here were put together just on the iphone as I don’t own an ipad, so it goes to show that it can be done and it’s great fun!!  Take a look at some of the images on this website http://www.iphoneart.com/ to see what can be achieved. They are some truly amazing shots here by some fantastic artists. Thanks for Looking..

Passing Time Iphone image Edit.

Here’s another image that I decided to create from Five separate images off my iphone. All the editing was created on my iphone as well using a number of different apps, namely Snapseed, superimpose, distressed fx, mextures and scratchcam. To begin with I needed a background…..

IMG_1508 Plain grey with a bit of texture, a plain old wall! IMG_1510 IMG_1511 IMG_0635 IMG_1512 These were the four main ingredients to my image, a picture of snow drops, a clock from my kitchen, a spinning girl from a wedding and a street shot of some people walking past me in London’s Hyde Park. The next step(s) was to import into superimpose separately and work on each image until I was happy with the final result.

IMG_1695 This is a screenshot from superimpose with the background grey wall and foreground Snow drop being worked on. You can mask the foreground and then erase any of the image you want before using the transform to scale and position on to the background image and using the blending mode to finish. I then saved each mask until I had my final image.

IMG_1516 I then tweaked a bit in Snapseed before running the image through distressed fx and mextures. I finished the image in Scratchcam.

IMG_1515 IMG_1517 IMG_1518 IMG_1519 This is great fun and fairly easy to do with a bit of practice and can give your creative side a boost. I take pictures of lots of backgrounds and objects lying about with the intention of creating single images from them. Please leave your comments below and of course any questions about my techniques. Thank you.

Hipstamatic Street Trip

IMG_4634 IMG_4633 Visited London’s west end this week, a walk round Soho and Chinatown before finishing up at the Photograhers gallery just off Oxford street. By the way some great exhibitions up there at the moment, particularly the Mass observation exhibit which features some great images from 1937 through the 40’s 50’s and 60’s and revised in 1981 as a life writing project. Well worth a peek. The first image was taken in Soho Square a small green space in Soho. The Second image is an all too familiar site in many Capitals around the world.

IMG_4499 IMG_4476 IMG_4479 The First Image was taken in The Photographer’s Gallery and the next Two in Chinatown, which is a wonderful place to visit and eat!!! The great thing about the iphone is it’s compatibility with street photography. It’s small unobtrusive and people don’t seem to care that your taking pictures, just try doing that with a DSLR and see if you get the same reaction! add to that the great apps and your on to a winner. Hipstamatic is great for this and really is my camera of choice for street scenes.

IMG_4635  IMG_4537 IMG_4523IMG_4632  Finally some shots of Oxford street and the journey home. Again you can take images that you wouldn’t dream of taking with a bigger camera and the quality lets me print to A4 with no great loss of quality.. Happy days..

Brighton Visit

IMG_4224 Another shot of the west pier in Brighton. Added the Moon in lenslight, and darkened in Mextures for a Dusk effect. Processed in Snapseed and distressed FX as well. Brighton’s a great place for photographers lots of hidden alleys and old worldy buildings. There’s new and old, pristine and worn and lots of graffiti!! Here’s a couple of Hopstamatic shots of the town…….

IMG_4182 IMG_4178 The first is an area known as the Lanes, lots of old shops down narrow alleys.. The second is a shot of the Royal Pavilion an  extravagant pleasure palace.Built for the Prince Regent, later King George IV, in stages between 1787 and 1823. There’s also a great museum there and pleasant gardens.

IMG_4257 This is a shot of some disused lock ups/ beach huts! not quite sure which. Taken with Bracket mode for a dark and light exposure then combined using PRO hdr and processed using Filterstorm, Distressed FX, Mextures and Snapseed for a grungy overall effect. Will definitely be returning there soon if only to get some shots of the Victorian train station…

West Pier Brighton

IMG_4194  IMG_4197

IMG_4198  IMG_4215

IMG_4207  IMG_4211 Visited Brighton Today and took some pictures of the old west Pier that lies burnt out and abandoned to the sea. It was built in 1866 and was used up until about 1975 and was due to be renovated before suffering from two fires. All these images were taken on my iphone 4 using procamera for the first image and bracket mode for the second and third images. Basic editing in Snapseed..brightness, sharpening and a drama filter, then exported to Distressed FX and mextures for the texture effects. Finally into Snapseed again for some blurring and the frames. Quite pleased with the results as it was and overcast and dreary day, the subject matter was strong and I think this helped with the overall strength of the images. It would be interesting if anyone agrees/disagrees with this!

Capture and editing with my Iphone

IMG_4003 IMG_4007 Hi, thought i’d share some more iphone images and post processing using just the iphone and some different apps. This image was taken at Buckingshire golf course in Denham, Bucks very early one morning using Bracket mode and pro HDR to get the desired exposure you can see the steam rising off the lake in the background!!. . After capture I did some basic adjustments using Snapseed, including a crop and sharpening. Then I added a moon using Lenslight and then some different textures using Distressed FX and Mextures. Finally into suoerimpose to apply a mask and some gentle blurring to get the finished image.

IMG_4011 IMG_4021Very similar treatment for this next image taken on the same day. Bracket mode ans pro HDR for capture, Snapseed, lenslight, distreesed FX and mextures for processing before using superimpose for some blur and back to Snapseed for a frame. The great thing about these apps is you can adjust the level at which you want to apply the treatment, so you can be as subtle or over the top as you want.

IMG_3996 IMG_4001 This last image was taken near the South Bank in London early evening. Using snapseed I cropped to a square frame  and made some basic adjustments. Using an app called Perspective I changed the position of the building slightly before using Distressed FX and mextures to create the texture I wished. All This is very easy to achieve using just the Iphone and the only real limits are your imagination so why not give it a go, it really is great fun!
