Iphone editing and blending techniques

Hi, i’ve been using the new improved superimpose blending app again recently. This is a fantastic blending app where you can create some stunning effects. You can combine two photos layered over each other and with different transparencies or blend textures, borders etc or just superimpose or juxtapose by removing parts of your image and replacing backgrounds etc. I normally start all my edits with snapseed which just about does everything you need as well as some great effect textures as well.( see my earlier post on snapseed for more information). I then import into superimpose, starting with a background. I will then add the foreground image and use the masking screen to erase all unwanted areas. You can zoom in super close so your level of detail will be stunning with plenty of fine tune and blending options. When i’ve finished with superimpose I will normally import the image into scratchcam or noir( for mono). Scratchcam has some spectacular effects and is a firm favourite. I will then import back into snapseed for some fine tuning and normally a border as well. Here’s two images I’ve recently worked on….

IMG_5312 IMG_5322

The first I called scream & shout, the second Echoes#5 part of an ongoing project about memories and experiences. Scream & shout is made up of two iphone images both taken using the hipstamatic app..

IMG_3306 hyde park 2013 137

As you can see they had different combo’s (film and lens combinations) as well. I used superimpose to blend background and foreground, and then scratchcam to add a filter effect. Next I imported back to snapseed, got rid of the border and added a new skinnier one and adjusted the effects like brightness and warmth.

The second image Echoes#5 is made from three Iphone images taken again with the hipstamatic app…

IMG_5316 IMG_1602 IMG_5317

Once again I blended together in superimpose, positioning the man in separate locations and making him slightly transparent to give the effect of something remembered or witnessed. I then imported to scratchcam and added one of their effects…

IMG_5318 IMG_5320

The first image is the scratchcam effect and the second is after I took it through snapseed and altered the overall tone and colours. The Final image was completed in snapseed using the great HDR filter and finally a border from their frames filter…

Thanks again for Looking and please leave any comments you wish to make..

Oggl by Hipstamatic The Social Photo Sharing Network

Hi today I’d like to share with you Oggl by hipstamatic, their social photo sharing network. It’s similar to Instagram but I tend to find that more serious photographers post their images here, with not so many selfies , food or advertising posts. Don’t get me wrong Instamatic is great and I use it a lot, but I much prefer Oggl and it’s unique way of cataloguing and sharing images. You can join for free and use a limited number of Hipstamatic Film + lens combos or pay £1.99 for 3 months or £6.99 a year and have access to all your Hipsta combo’s by importing them over. Once you’ve downloaded the app and opened it you will see the home screen…

IMG_5122 IMG_5123 This screen acts a bit like a news screen for oggl, showing things like people you’re following and fresh photos uploaded recently it also gives a link to recent instagram images. The search screen allows you to look for specific people or friends and shows a few more collections, profiles and interesting images as well……

IMG_5125  This is my home screen on oggl. It’s shows the number of people following me, my profile picture, my shared images and my collections. You can edit your screen image and change your profile here. My collections are images i’ve either favourited and reposted or separate collections that i’ve created i.e people portraits and moody streets. This is a great way to keep images of separate genres together and other people can subscribe to your collections as well….

IMG_5142 IMG_5143

IMG_5126  This is where I can see all the likes and favs for my images, I can easily go to their page and like their images from here as well. Unfortunately there no comment facility but some people get over this by giving a mention in their caption space when they upload an image. You can see these mentions by looking them up in your settings on your home screen!..

You can import images into oggl from your picture library or directly from Hipstamatic, and of course take pictures from oggl’s own camera as well!!

IMG_5129 IMG_5140When you select the camera, you have the choice of using any number of combo’s for your picture taking. You are able to save your favourite combo’s or mix and match from any of the different lenses and film’s you have imported. The second screenshot is from Hipstamatic and shows their sharing option so you can import to another app.

IMG_5132 IMG_5133 IMG_5134 The first screenshot is of my photo library where my pictures are stored or I can import from my camera roll by tapping the + button on the top left hand corner. The second screenshot is of a selected image that I want to publish in oggl. I can change the filter at the bottom of the screen as shown in the third screenshot.I’m now ready to tag and share this image…

IMG_5135 IMG_5136 As you can see from the first screenshot you are able to share with facebook, twitter, instagram etc by pressing the corresponding icon. You can enter a location and a caption i.e title, editing and even a thank you to another person by hashtagging their user id.. Now I’m ready to share on the oggl community..

IMG_5137 IMG_5138 IMG_5139 After pressing the share button my image will appear in the latest fresh photo stream where people can look at it, like it and repost if they want. You can simply like by double tapping the image or by tapping the like button at the bottom…

I hope this explains Oggl a bit to you, as i’ve not found too much on the web that explains it very well. Give it a go, it does take a little bit of time to get used to it but that effort is well worth it.. Thanks again for reading and let me know your thoughts…

Hipstamatic combos and images

Hi, I’ve recently realised i’m shooting with the hipstamatic app more and more! I have about four or five different camera apps loaded onto my iphone including camera+, camera pro, 645 pro and others, but the go to app seems to be Hipstamatic time and again and here’s some reasons why.. Firstly variety! there’s so many different combinations of lenses and film it’s pretty mindboggling! you can customise your camera with different coloured cases and even different styles! and you can even save your favourite combos too. you can shoot with a low resolution (640×640 pixels) for web use right up to high res (2448 x 2448 pixels) for print quality. Just be careful you’ve got the high res switched on as it’s easy to knock the lever back down to low res as i’ve done in the past!!

ok here’s some of my favourite combos and some images to show you..

IMG_4066  IMG_4384  IMG_4960

Lowy lens and Uchitel 20 film. Old fashioned look!

IMG_4434  IMG_4680 IMG_4965

Lowy lens and Robusta film. Lovely colour rendition..

IMG_2231  IMG_2288 IMG_4961

Yoona lens and Blanko BL4 film. I love this effect!!

Tinto 1884 lens and D-type plate film..Old plate type effects..

IMG_3167 IMG_3152 IMG_4962

Sergio + maximus LXIX..Warm image rendition..

IMG_4537  hyde park 2013 118 IMG_4963

Lowy + Claunch 72..For B&W lovers..

IMG_4877  hyde park 2013 137  IMG_4964

John S + Blackeys supergrain. For gritty B&W lovers..

The combos go on and on so I won’t bore you with anymore. I just wanted to give you an idea of how good this app is. It’s free to download from the app store with some basic combos, but you can purchase loads more from 0.69 pence!! …

IMG_4969 You can share your images from the app onto Oggl, instagram twitter etc.. If you have Oggl ( a hipstamatic sharing site a bit like instagram) you can download all your combos there ( for a small fee) and share directly online even using it’s own native camera!!

I import my hipsta images into all my different editing apps and blend with other images taken from different camera apps to create all sorts of various effects so there really is no end to your creative urges!! I also print many of my hipsta images 10″ x 10″ and have even won some competitions with the finished prints so quality is first class! I will post about Oggl in the near future as this is a great sister app for hipstamatic with a growing fanbase and some stunning images there. Until then thanks for reading and hopefully be inspired to give Hipstamatic a go!!..

Hipstamatic Shooting and editing

Hi, Thought I’d post an image taken on my iphone5 using the Hipstamatic app. I’ve mentioned before about hipstamatic, It’s a great analogue effect app with loads of different lens/film combos. You can choose between a number of different flashes as well as alternative cases to stylise to your own tastes. There are literally hundreds of combos and it produces some really cool images. Take a look at some of the Hipstamatic groups on flickr to see what can be achieved. Also check out facebook, Oggl and Instagram for inspiration. Your find me under calmas5 on both oggl and instagram. Here’s the original image….

IMG_3657 I used the Yoona lens and blanko bl with the standard Flash. I housed everything in the full metal camera case….

IMG_3780 IMG_3781

My first edit was done using the snapseed and film noir apps. Snapseed is my go to editing app (see my earlier post on snapseed). Film noir is a fantastic Black+White editing app that lets you “dial” in effects to give you great control..

IMG_3784 IMG_3783 Heres the final version..

IMG_3681

The next edit was done through snapseed and scratchcam, a great texture app with loads of effects…

IMG_3475 You can also adjust the overall effect on this as well. Here’s the edited version..

IMG_3684 I think I prefer this versions, but who knows I may well change my mind or even re-edit later on..Thanks.

Hipstamatic image editing and sharing in Oggl.

Decided to have a day trip to Portland, Dorset yesterday and get some more images just using the Hipstamatic app and the Yoona-blanko bl4 combo. First of all headed to Chesil beach which is a famous shingle barrier beach which is part of Dorset’s Jurassic coastline. Took Loads of images and selected a few to share on Oggl after minor editing using the Snapseed app. Moved further up the beach towards the Portland end for some more image making after that. I will show you some of my images as well as a work though of my Snapseed editing process in the next few pictures starting with two images of the beach…

IMG_2475 IMG_2474

Then some street images from along the Beach front….

IMG_2450 IMG_2455 IMG_2460

This next image was taken with hipstamatic and edited with snapseed and i’ve added some pictures of my workflow with it..

IMG_2463  Original image brought into snapseed.. My first task was to straighten and crop….

IMG_2465 IMG_2466  Then I sharpened and tuned the image for the effect I wanted…

IMG_2464 I added a very subtle HDR effect. It’s really useful that you can dial down the strength of all the effects to get the right feel for your images..

IMG_2467 Finally I added a slight blur around the image and a white grunge border to finish off..

IMG_2469 IMG_2468   Here’s my final image along with another slightly different effect..

IMG_2470

IMG_2454

Finally I shared all my finished Images on the Oggl and Instagram photosharing sites…Thanks for reading and please leave any comments below…..

Hipstamatic Images and Iphone editing

IMG_5145 IMG_5146 IMG_2231 Went to the Victoria and Albert museum in London last week and decided to just use the hipstamatic app with the Yoona lens and blanko BL4 film for my images. This combo gives a great retro vintage look. It was quite dark in places but the images turned out ok, and only needed minimal editing. Main editing app used was Snapseed to adjust the brightness, contrast etc, add some blur to the edges and put a border around to finish off.

IMG_2128 IMG_2122 Here’s some more blended images that were made up of three other images and melded together in my favourite blending app, Superimpose. Here’s the three images that I used…

IMG_2069 IMG_2121 IMG_2108 The first blended image is actually made up of only the second two images, and processed in snapseed, superimpose, distressed fx and scratchcam. The second image is made up of all three images and processed in the same applications as the previous image.

IMG_1961 IMG_1974 IMG_1903 IMG_1918 I frequently use the same images for different composite creations as you can see in the next three images…

IMG_2028 IMG_2034 IMG_1989 It never ceases to amaze me the number of different effects and textures you can achieve on the iphone using just a few different apps. All my images here were put together just on the iphone as I don’t own an ipad, so it goes to show that it can be done and it’s great fun!!  Take a look at some of the images on this website http://www.iphoneart.com/ to see what can be achieved. They are some truly amazing shots here by some fantastic artists. Thanks for Looking..

Iphone edits, Oggl and shooting Underground

iphone Hi, Starting off with an image shot at a wedding a couple of years ago. I liked thwe sense of movement in the shot and decided to transfer over to my iphone and edit there. Then I posted it on Oggl, hipstamatic’s newish sharing site, which is great and my go to site for sharing as it tends to attract people into photography more than shappers!

iphone1 IMG_0705 I edited in photshop Cs4 first using silver efex pro, then transferred over to my Iphone and edited in snapseed to get the second image. Then over into Oggl where you can select any number of lens-film combos to get the effect you want. Here I used the Jane lens, big up film combo. I frequently mix and match images taken on my Nikon D90 and Panasonic GF2 along with those taken on my Iphone and love the different effects that can be achieved with a bit of iphone editing.

IMG_0103 iphone4 051 Another Great source of image material is Shooting on the underground network, there are always images just waiting to be captured and the Iphone is the perfect tool for doing it. I nearly always shoot using the Hipstamatic app and preload a film/lens combo beforehand. You can always change the effect later once you’ve transferred them over to Oggl and choose different combos! I love people shots and the different expressions and positions you can find especially on the Train after another hard day’s graft.

Sardines iphone4 015 So I urge you go on give it a go if nothing else you should have some fun and maybe one or two great images ready to be shared. Merry Xmas.

Hipstamatic and Oggl!!

oggl iphone 011I have been playing with the new Oggl app from hipstamatic the last few weeks. It’s similar to Instagram but you can use all their cool lens and film combos so it’s great for obtaining loads of different effects when your out and about. The first Three shots on this blog were all taken at a Bus depot while I was waiting around for a Bus.

oggl iphone 010 It’s great for candid’s and those unexpected moments.!! I love the effects gained from Hipstamatic and have recently been re shooting some of my old DSLR shots with the iphone hipsta app and have been very pleased with the results.

oggl iphone 024

The next Two images are portraits. The first was taken with Oggl using the Tinto 1884 lens and D-type plate film combo. The second image was one of my old DSLR portraits re taken with the iphone, I quite like the end result.iphone4 006iphone library etc 037

Finally sold my Nikon recently with some trepidation, but I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I used to so I thought it would serve someone else better. I might eventually go back to grown up cameras again, and I have kept my GF2  even buying a new lens for it, the 45-175mm zoom. All I need now is some extra days to go and enjoy my photography. And some Sunshine :o)
