Photo editing using photoshop and efex pro

Studio Session-048 Hi, long time no post! sorry i.ve been busy with work and haven’t had much time for blogging or even photography!! Today i’m going to show my workflow for one of my selfie images. This was taken on a nikon d90 in my bedroom with just window light from a window facing me. The camera was on a tripod and tethered to lightroom on my laptop. The image was taken in raw for maximum info.

Studio Session-048-2 In lightroom i cropped the image and adjusted the contrast and highlights and shadows as well as boosting the clarity, i then opened the image in photoshop cs4. Here i created separate masks to lighten and darken areas of the image without degrading the image.

EYE CONTACT by craigpoltocklclass1.jpg prints Finally i opened the image in silver efex pro and used the high structure filter with slight adjustments to highlights and shadows. I know it a kind of basic explanation but i just wanted to show what can be achieved with just a few editing techniques. The image took about 45 minutes to create and i think looks a lot better for it. I will try to post a more detailed explanation in the future when i work out how to take screen shots!! thanks for reding and as usual i will answer any question or comments,

Iphone Manipulations

Hi all, I thought I’d share some of my iphone images today. These are all part of a series of images that I have created on the iphone5 using the phone as the camera and editing tool. I haven’t named the series yet although I have toyed with a couple of titles ie Echoes, Memory. They are all set in hallways or corridors and have people in them walking away from the camera as ghostly figures or memories of what the hallway itself would remember if it had the ability!!

IMG_2797 IMG_2637 IMG_2128 These were the first three that I created using the iphone and where the idea first sprang to life. I was fascinated by the concept of buildings having memory and what events or stories they have silently witnessed over their lifetime. Especially school corridors where countless generations of children have been left by their parents on the first day and of the emotional responses that involved.

LEFT BEHIND by craigpoltock class1.jpg digi 20-2 IMG_6343 beyond corridors by craig poltock class 1. print print echoes

All these images were taken on the iphone and blended using an app called superimpose where you can have a background image and paste onto that other images and effects. I then developed the image further by using Snapseed primarily and other apps like scratchcam, icolorama and distreesed fx for finishing touches.

Final Destination Memories of Light by craig poltock class1. prints IMG_5321As you can see most of my models are repeated in the final images as they were saved in superimpose as already edited and they suited the overall theme well. This is an ongoing project that I have no idea where it heading or if it will change or evolve in some way. I will hopefully keep you posted as and when it does. Thanks for looking and please comment if you have any input.

Creating images using Iphone editing and blending apps

Hi, today I thought I would share some more editing techniques and effects with you. I have a pretty standard way of doing things generally but do like to shake it up a bit or try new techniques/apps as well!  These next few images were edited using a variation of these apps, Snapseed, Scratchcam, Superimpose and Icolorama. My workflow is usually snapseed for basic edits, superimpose for blending, then snapseed, icolorama and scratchcam for filters and effects.

IMG_0043 IMG_5933 IMG_5930IMG_5956

I will now walkthrough the final image with my blending and editing workflow..

IMG_6023 IMG_6024 After basic edits in snapseed my first port of call is superimpose. This is a powerful and amazing blending app and my number one choice. There are other great blending apps out there so feel free to use the one your most comfortable with as I believe the principles the same. In the first instance import your background…

IMG_6025 It will allow you to crop and choose your constraints. I normally work with the square crop. Once this is done I import the foreground..

IMG_6026 IMG_6027 I can make this the same size as the background by double clicking the image in transform mode. I then enter masking mode where I click on the mask item to hide the background.

IMG_6028 IMG_6029 From here there’s a brush palette where you can adjust size and softness, select an eraser or magic wand tool as well as a lasso and a color range masking tool. As you can see it’s quite easy to paint on the mask and you can zoom really close for fine details. I normally use a stylus but your finger works just fine. There’s even a blur icon where you can feather the edges.

IMG_6030 IMG_6031 IMG_6032 Once finished with the masking filter you enter the transform filter where you can resize the image, rotate and use blending modes to change the appearance…..

IMG_6033 IMG_6034 When you have finished you can merge the images (ie flatten) and save to your camera roll..

IMG_6036 IMG_6037 IMG_6038 Next it’s back to snapseed for some fine tuning, a slight HDR effect and a conversion to B&W. Again I save this to my camera roll. Next I will open up icolorama which is a  fantastic and very powerful editing app..

IMG_6040 IMG_6041 Here I can select the image from my camera roll and even have a choice of sizes to edit from. I nearly always go for the largest so I can print later..

IMG_6042 IMG_6043 IMG_6044 There’s so much to learn in this app that I could go on all day, you can mask and manipulate to your hearts content and even add scripts and different filters to an image. I just went for a simple style effect called sketch which I then reduced the opacity of it to give a more subtle finish.

IMG_5957There are some great Videos on youtube that walkthrough some of the icolorama effects and are well worth checking out. There’s also some links in sites like the appwhisperer. http://theappwhisperer.com/.

Thanks again for stopping by and I hope this helps some of you. Feel free to comment below and have a great Xmas and New year…bye..

Iphone editing and blending techniques

Hi, i’ve been using the new improved superimpose blending app again recently. This is a fantastic blending app where you can create some stunning effects. You can combine two photos layered over each other and with different transparencies or blend textures, borders etc or just superimpose or juxtapose by removing parts of your image and replacing backgrounds etc. I normally start all my edits with snapseed which just about does everything you need as well as some great effect textures as well.( see my earlier post on snapseed for more information). I then import into superimpose, starting with a background. I will then add the foreground image and use the masking screen to erase all unwanted areas. You can zoom in super close so your level of detail will be stunning with plenty of fine tune and blending options. When i’ve finished with superimpose I will normally import the image into scratchcam or noir( for mono). Scratchcam has some spectacular effects and is a firm favourite. I will then import back into snapseed for some fine tuning and normally a border as well. Here’s two images I’ve recently worked on….

IMG_5312 IMG_5322

The first I called scream & shout, the second Echoes#5 part of an ongoing project about memories and experiences. Scream & shout is made up of two iphone images both taken using the hipstamatic app..

IMG_3306 hyde park 2013 137

As you can see they had different combo’s (film and lens combinations) as well. I used superimpose to blend background and foreground, and then scratchcam to add a filter effect. Next I imported back to snapseed, got rid of the border and added a new skinnier one and adjusted the effects like brightness and warmth.

The second image Echoes#5 is made from three Iphone images taken again with the hipstamatic app…

IMG_5316 IMG_1602 IMG_5317

Once again I blended together in superimpose, positioning the man in separate locations and making him slightly transparent to give the effect of something remembered or witnessed. I then imported to scratchcam and added one of their effects…

IMG_5318 IMG_5320

The first image is the scratchcam effect and the second is after I took it through snapseed and altered the overall tone and colours. The Final image was completed in snapseed using the great HDR filter and finally a border from their frames filter…

Iphone editing on fuji x20 images.

Hi, just got back from a week in Wales which was great and it only rained once! Took my iphone5 and my fuji x20 and got some great shots. Just beginning to get to grips with the fuji and I’m quite pleased with the results. I always used to shoot raw but I’m finding that the jpegs straight from the camera are great. I’m also editing all my images on the iphone and the results are good. These shots were taken in Brick lane London on the fuji and edited on my iphone5 when I got back.. IMG_4034 IMG_4044 IMG_4039 IMG_4038 I used some of my favorite apps to edit namely Snapseed, Scratchcam and Filmnoir. I used the HDR filter in snapseed to bring out some details and then dialed it down to about 25-30%. My next image is of my son Callum taken against bright sunlight in Wales. I used a black and white filter on the fuji and spot metered of his face. I then adjusted in Lightroom and copied into my iphone to play with some filters, I quite like the results.DSCF6309 DSCF6309-21 The first image is the original straight from the camera, the second is after it went through lightroom. The next image is post iphone editing using snapseed, filmnoir, icolorama and scratchcam. cal (2)

The next picture was taken at the same time, here’s the original..

DSCF6308 After some minor tweaks in Lightroom I imported to the iphone and edited in this order..snapseed, filmnoir , scratchcam and snapseed again..

IMG_4738 IMG_4739  IMG_4740 And here’s the final version.

IMG_4737 I prefer the first image but my wife likes this one best… All in all it took about 20-30 minutes per image so not bad or nearly as long as photoshop.

Thanks again for looking and please comment..

Street Photography and iphone editing

Hi, today I’m posting three images taken on a trip to London’s Brick Lane in the borough of Tower Hamlets. This is a great place for street photography as it’s so busy and colourful with some amazing characters. It’s also a great place for a curry!! All three images were taken on my new fuji x20 and then transferred to my iphone5 and edited in just three apps, Snapseed, scratchcam and Noir ( a great B&W textures app). Here’s the  first image…

IMG_3998 I cropped and did all the basic editing in snapseed then imported it into Noir and scratchcam to try different textures and effects…

IMG_4004 IMG_4003 IMG_4002

IMG_3999 IMG_4001 I quite like the gritty film look especially the scratches on the second image. Heres the next image..

IMG_4012 I love the look just as I pressed the shutter….Again I processed in snapseed and used a subtle Hdr filter there to bring out the details more. I then processed in Noir and scratchcam to add some grungy effects to the image..

IMG_4005 IMG_4006

IMG_4012 IMG_4013

Again I prefer the last image with it’s just found in the street effect!! The first two images were just developed in snapseed using the Hdr filter and the grunge filter..

Finally there’s this image..

IMG_4015 I once again used just the three apps to get some different results..

IMG_4016 IMG_4017

IMG_4018 IMG_4020 My favourites are 2 & 3.

I was quite impressed with the fuji x20. It only has a small sensor but coped remarkably well. It’s ideal for street photography as it’s retro, small and silent! It’s fantastic with B&W images and even the low light shots look grainy as opposed to noisy. It’s an ideal second camera.. Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment.

Hipstamatic Shooting and editing

Hi, Thought I’d post an image taken on my iphone5 using the Hipstamatic app. I’ve mentioned before about hipstamatic, It’s a great analogue effect app with loads of different lens/film combos. You can choose between a number of different flashes as well as alternative cases to stylise to your own tastes. There are literally hundreds of combos and it produces some really cool images. Take a look at some of the Hipstamatic groups on flickr to see what can be achieved. Also check out facebook, Oggl and Instagram for inspiration. Your find me under calmas5 on both oggl and instagram. Here’s the original image….

IMG_3657 I used the Yoona lens and blanko bl with the standard Flash. I housed everything in the full metal camera case….

IMG_3780 IMG_3781

My first edit was done using the snapseed and film noir apps. Snapseed is my go to editing app (see my earlier post on snapseed). Film noir is a fantastic Black+White editing app that lets you “dial” in effects to give you great control..

IMG_3784 IMG_3783 Heres the final version..

IMG_3681

The next edit was done through snapseed and scratchcam, a great texture app with loads of effects…

IMG_3475 You can also adjust the overall effect on this as well. Here’s the edited version..

IMG_3684 I think I prefer this versions, but who knows I may well change my mind or even re-edit later on..Thanks.

Shooting and editing on the iphone5.

Hi, thought I’d share my latest edition to the Echoes series. This one is titled Leaving and as with a lot of my images it features the backs of people!! I don’t know if thats an issue or I’m scared of shooting people head on but I do like the feeling it gives to my images and to the series in general, that of shades or memories that have been retained by a building or location. This is how I achieved this image starting with the finished image..

IMG_3463

The background image is of a corridor in my son’s college which I’ve used for a few of my creations..

IMG_3469 This was imported into superimpose to be used as the background.

I then imported my foreground image which was taken using the hipstamatic app with the Yoona lens BlankBL4 combo.

IMG_3440 Using the mask tool I carefully erased everything apart from the three figures and their shadows which I positioned and resized using the transform tool over the background..

IMG_3470 IMG_3471 I then used the blending tool to reduce the opacity and merged the two images together..

IMG_3472 I then saved the image to my camera roll and reopened it in scratchcam where I played around with the different textures and effects. I normally try most of the textures to see how the image looks, although sometimes I have a pretty good idea…

IMG_3475 IMG_3473 When I’m happy with the effect I save to my camera roll and import into snapseed to finish off. I normally add a border and try out the different effects and textures before finishing the image and saving it. Here I just used a frame and a slight blur around the edges..

IMG_3463 Here’s two more versions of the same image..

IMG_3464 IMG_3465

That’s it, a fairly straight forward edit and another addition to my Echoes series. Thanks again for looking and feel free to contact me…

Iphone image workflow and evolution.

Hi, Thought I’d post another manipulated image today, with an explanation as to how I achieved it and what apps I used. Also the different ideas and how the image evolves. Here’s the final image which I titled Recollections. I wanted a slightly unnerving appeal with the main character in a hospital gown visualising events from his past. All the images were taken using the Hipstamatic app.

IMG_3382 There’s him the younger man to his right shouting in the street, His parents walking away from him fading into the distance, and the additional older character leaving the scene. There’s four images all merged together in superimpose which is a fantastic app for this kind of workflow. I started with just a background..

7818684424_051fcfd48b_b This I cropped square and got rid of the birds on the left. I then imported my first image, the man in the hospital gown..

IMG_3369 IMG_3370 IMG_3371 You can use the transform tool to resize the image and place it anywhere on the background. There are also blending modes with which you can adjust the opacity or overlay the image. I then brought in the other images into superimpose. There’s a masking tool where you can erase and paint onto any part of the image. Here I used saved images from previous works that are kept in the library, another great feature..

IMG_3372 IMG_3373 IMG_3374 IMG_3375

As you can see I’ve positioned each layer where I wanted, resized and blended into the main image. I then saved the image to my camera roll and opened it up in scratchcam. This is another great app that has loads of different textures and scratches built in. You can also dial down the effect to get the desired result.

IMG_3376 IMG_3377 I also use distressedfx and mextures a lot, two fantastic texture apps as well. I then saved to my camera roll and opened up the image in my number one app snapseed. This is a great editing app that has loads of different effects built in as well as some useful textures like vintage and grunge..

IMG_3379 IMG_3380 IMG_3381 The first image is with a grunge effect added, the second with a vintage effect which I settled for. I also added a border and finally saved to my camera roll..

IMG_3382 I always put the image through various programs to see how it may improve and sometimes come back to an image after a period of time and change it around then for a fresh perspective. This is all part of the evolution of an image and is why I never truly consider them complete!

IMG_3354 IMG_3353 IMG_3352 IMG_3350

Four different interpretations of the same image. Thanks for looking and please post any comments below….

Iphone hipstamatic edited images.

Hi, Thought I’d share another image from my Echoes series. This is basically three iphone5 images that were brought into superimpose and a single image was created from them. I then did some basic editing in snapseed and took the image through scratchcam to give it a grungy just found in the street feel.

IMG_3157 IMG_3255 IMG_3263

All the original images were taken on my iphone using the hipstamatic app which is my most used camera replacement app and has some great lens/film combos. The first image was taken with the sergio + maximus LXIX combo and the next two with the Yoona + blanko BL4 combo. Heres the final image after my editing was completed…

IMG_3311

Thanks for Looking and please leave any feedback you may have….
