Iphone processing… Oxeye Daisy

IMG_4666 IMG_4677 First off a big thank you to Skip from http://skipology.com for the inspiration behind these next two images. Please visit his site, the images are amazing and far superior to these and he selflessly  publishes tutorials on his workflow and the apps he uses. This Oxeye Daisy was from my garden, it was placed in a vase against a neutral background and shot using the pro camera app which allows you to set the exposure and the focus. I opened in snapseed first to crop and sharpen and the created a textured layer in Distressed FX. I then opened up both layers in Filterstorm and using a mask erased the texture from the daisy itself, then flattened the image. Next I opened using 100cameras and used one of there amazing collection of filters to get the desired effect. Title FX is a great app for adding text  with loads of options. Finally back to snapseed for the frame. Here’s another before and after image of the same flower with some of the vase showing. The processing was identical to the first image minus the text. All in all both images took about 1.5 hours to process and everything was done on the iphone!

Hipstamatic Street Trip

IMG_4634 IMG_4633 Visited London’s west end this week, a walk round Soho and Chinatown before finishing up at the Photograhers gallery just off Oxford street. By the way some great exhibitions up there at the moment, particularly the Mass observation exhibit which features some great images from 1937 through the 40’s 50’s and 60’s and revised in 1981 as a life writing project. Well worth a peek. The first image was taken in Soho Square a small green space in Soho. The Second image is an all too familiar site in many Capitals around the world.

IMG_4499 IMG_4476 IMG_4479 The First Image was taken in The Photographer’s Gallery and the next Two in Chinatown, which is a wonderful place to visit and eat!!! The great thing about the iphone is it’s compatibility with street photography. It’s small unobtrusive and people don’t seem to care that your taking pictures, just try doing that with a DSLR and see if you get the same reaction! add to that the great apps and your on to a winner. Hipstamatic is great for this and really is my camera of choice for street scenes.

IMG_4635  IMG_4537 IMG_4523IMG_4632  Finally some shots of Oxford street and the journey home. Again you can take images that you wouldn’t dream of taking with a bigger camera and the quality lets me print to A4 with no great loss of quality.. Happy days..

Hipstamatic Processing

IMG_1497 IMG_1474 IMG_1340  Thought I’d show some portraits for a change. All these shot were originally taken with my Nikon D90 DSLR camera. I then retook them using my Iphone and the Hipstamatic app. I like the old worn effect which goes especially well with B&W portraiture. It’s great you can muck about like this with just a phone and some time.

IMG_1360 IMG_3434 Another couple of images using the same processing. I love the way you can experiment with the iphone, it may not have loads of megapixels or any controls for shutter speed and aperture or even super sharp varieties of lenses but you don’t need them all the time. With an iphone or any other smartphone you do have lots of fun taking and then processing your images. You can create works of art or just snapshots of the family, you can use zero apps or 30 and some of the stuff that’s out there is amazing. I’ve set myself a challenge this year. I’m a member of the local photographic society and have decided to enter at least 50% of my images taken on the iphone in digital format and print! I’m interested in how it will be received and judged, and if anyone will be able to tell the difference anyway! Wish me luck and I’ll let you know how I get on…

IMG_4389 IMG_4030 Just for a change of subject thought I’d post a couple of more heavily processed images. The First image was taken on the iphone, and is actually about 8 images stitched using autostitch. Pfrocessed in Snapseed, Filterstorm, Distressed FX , Mextures and Lenslight. The Second Image is a single Iphone image taken with Procamera and processed with Snapseed, Distressed FX, Mextures and Lenslight… Thanks for  looking….

Brighton Visit

IMG_4224 Another shot of the west pier in Brighton. Added the Moon in lenslight, and darkened in Mextures for a Dusk effect. Processed in Snapseed and distressed FX as well. Brighton’s a great place for photographers lots of hidden alleys and old worldy buildings. There’s new and old, pristine and worn and lots of graffiti!! Here’s a couple of Hopstamatic shots of the town…….

IMG_4182 IMG_4178 The first is an area known as the Lanes, lots of old shops down narrow alleys.. The second is a shot of the Royal Pavilion an  extravagant pleasure palace.Built for the Prince Regent, later King George IV, in stages between 1787 and 1823. There’s also a great museum there and pleasant gardens.

IMG_4257 This is a shot of some disused lock ups/ beach huts! not quite sure which. Taken with Bracket mode for a dark and light exposure then combined using PRO hdr and processed using Filterstorm, Distressed FX, Mextures and Snapseed for a grungy overall effect. Will definitely be returning there soon if only to get some shots of the Victorian train station…
